The Bernina stitch regulator (BSR) foot is a boon to the quilter when it comes to freehand work. With the feed dropped, the BSR foot detects the speed you are moving the fabric by hand. This will then subsequently increase or decrease the speed of the stitching. This in turn regulates and helps to ensure a consistently even stitch length.
