The Janome Atelier 9 combination machine is the top model in the Atelier family. As a sewing and embroidery machine, it offers a fair amount of flexibility. And many sewers enjoy a machine they can use to both sew and embroider with. Why wouldn’t they.
Janome Atelier 9 Combination Machine
So a bit of a run down of the main and useful features of this model. Just my thoughts based on what people like, and usually ask about when they call in the shop. And of course, what they want to know when we speak on the blower.
Medium Longarm Sewing Machine
So on the one hand, you have a medium longarm sewing machine with 8.3 inches from needle to neck. A good size for the everyday quilting enthusiast. The Janome Atelier 9 also has the necessary oomph required for thicker fabrics. It has a strong motor and a bit of weight behind the needle. However, the speed control feature means you have complete control. You can slow the speed down to a crawl, without losing any of that power.
7 Piece Feed Dog
Allied to the speed control feature is the 7 piece feed dog. The general improvement of feed dogs has been significant. I remember attending my first trade show with Dad, back in the early 1980’s. It was the first MemoryCraft model – the New Home (Janome) Memorycraft 6000. Quite a revolutionary sewing machine at the time. But the feed dogs were small. Whereas those on the Atelier 9 are much bigger. So when you sew you can really feel the draw. This machine will pull through yards and yards of fabric, all day long. It will feed evenly and smoothly, even thick and awkward fabrics.
Janome AcuFeed System
Quilters often require a walking foot for their sewing machine. Sewing a layer of wadding sandwiched between two layers of cotton will often be the reason why. Relying on just the Feed Dogs may cause the top layer of cotton to lag behind as you sew. Especially if you’re working on a long piece. The Janome Atelier 9 Combination Machine has the AcuFeed system, and it works like a walking foot. When attached, it feeds the top layer of fabric. This helps to produce a more even feed. Feed Dogs underneath, AcuFeed on top. Both feeding your quilt sandwich through nice and evenly.
Janome Atelier 9 Combination Machine Embroidery
The Atelier 9 has a built-in embroidery unit. Attach one of the three included embroidery frames to the unit. Then select from one of the numerous built in designs or fonts. Designs and lettering can be combined, sized and positioned to suit. In addition, there is also a USB socket on the machine. This allows you to upload Janome embroidery designs you may have bought, or had digitised.
Uploading Fonts to the Atelier 9
You will find embroidery fonts for sale online. Most people seem to find them on Etsy and want to use them for babywear etc. If you do buy a font please be aware of the following.
- You can’t use the built-in type editor to write a word or name
- Each letter is a separate design – treat it as though it was an image
- Each letter must be individually sized and positioned
Embroidery Software for the Janome Atelier 9
Janome produce a range of embroidery software products. Using the various packages adds an extra dimension to your embroidery. And I’m not talking about the Twilight Zone – I always enjoyed that series. Anyways. As with most things, the more you pay the more you get. From simple auto-digitising, to a full blown digitising package.
